Counselor's Corner

Dear Ordway Families,

This year, all three elementary schools have added a 50-minute Social Emotional Learning (SEL) specialist period, which allows the counselors to see all of the classrooms once or twice a month.

At Ordway, we are committed to creating a safe, caring, and respectful learning environment for every student. As part of this commitment and to align with state standards, the students have been learning the Second Step Anti-Bullying Program. This research-based curriculum teaches students how to develop empathy, manage emotions, and resolve conflicts respectfully. Second Step is a social-emotional learning program designed to help students:

  • Recognize, refuse, and report bullying behavior
  • Build strong empathy and communication skills
  • Practice conflict resolution and problem-solving
Through age-appropriate, engaging lessons, videos, and role-playing activities, students learned what bullying is, how to stand-up safely, and how to support peers who may be experiencing conflict. The students explored topics such as being respectful/kind, understanding feelings, how to be an upstander, and strategies to stay safe.

As parents, you play a key role in reinforcing a positive school climate. You can support your child by talking about what bullying looks or feels like, encouraging your child to speak up if they see someone being treated unfairly, and letting them know they can always talk to you or a trusted adult if something concerns them.

As always, please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Janette Dodge

Change of Clothes

Pacific Northwest fall weather is here!

We hold recess outside on the playground, rain or shine. Please send your student with warm clothes and a jacket, and pack a change of clothes in case they slip, slide, or tumble into a wet or muddy spot. If they need to change, most children feel more comfortable in their own clothes rather than borrowed items from the nurse’s office. Take a moment to find something comfortable for them to change into, pack it in a ziplock bag, and place it at the bottom of their backpack.
