Take Home Device Initiative

Every BISD student receives a Chromebook to use at school and at home. It’s one tool among many, supporting great teaching and hands-on learning, never replacing them.

At BISD, we believe in balanced learning. Students still build, create, experiment, read real books and learn side by side with classmates and teachers. Chromebooks are used intentionally, when they add real value: researching, writing, collaborating, practicing skills and reaching learning resources from anywhere.

Our Strategic Plan calls for expanding hands-on learning and helping students practice intentional technology use and the media literacy skills to navigate the digital world ethically. Providing every student with a device also supports equity, so all students have the same access to learning resources at school and at home.

A tool, not a replacement. Technology supports learning, but it doesn’t take the place of hands-on experiences, conversation and time away from screens.

Good to Know

Filtering at Home

The district’s content filter stays on when the Chromebook is used off campus, such as at home, the library or a coffee shop. Approved educational resources like Google Workspace for Education, online textbooks and learning tools remain available.

Device Protection Plan

Student Chromebooks come with a pre-installed protective shell. Accidental damage and repair costs that happen while the shell is on are covered by our third-party Device Protection Plan.

With the Device Protection Plan, there’s no need to purchase separate Chromebook insurance.

Not Covered

May Result in a Fine

  • Intentional damage, with or without the protective shell, including damage from tampering
  • Accidental damage that happens while the protective shell is off
  • Loss or theft of a device, case or charger
  • Damage or infestation from pets, animals, rodents or insects

Keep the shell on. District policy requires the protective shell to stay on student Chromebooks at all times. It should never be removed or replaced. Stickers are welcome, but only on the shell!
