Dear BISD Community,

It is hard to believe, but here we are in the middle of November! As we head into the Thanksgiving holiday next week, I wanted to take this opportunity to share some of the gratitude in my heart with each of you:

  • Student artwork in the hallways of our schools
  • The BHS Fall Play-It’s a Wonderful Life!
  • Our steadfast PTO boards and countless parent volunteers
  • Our small, but mighty Grounds crew working in sunshine and in rain
  • BSF working tirelessly to fundraise for the BISD
  • Staff rallying around their colleagues who may be going through a hard time
  • Our student athletes giving their all
  • The passage of the Supplemental Levy
  • Our student groups meeting to bring their voice and leadership to issues that matter
  • Sidewalk chalk messages on our playgrounds
  • The laughter that I hear in our departmental offices, classrooms, and school buildings
  • Our student band members giving high fives and nods of support during their performances
  • Smiles from the office staff at each building
  • Spartronics teams & the way in which they work together
  • The elementary student skipping down the hallway with a smile on their face
  • Our BISD kitchen staff providing healthy, delicious, nourishing meals

Thank you for supporting your child(ren), our BISD staff, and our great BISD community. I am so grateful to be a BISD parent, and am so proud to be Superintendent of the BISD.

Wishing you a Thanksgiving holiday full of rest, love and peace.

Take good care,
Amii Thompson
BISD Superintendent
Gratitude

Two & THREE Hour Delay for Inclement Weather Days

As part of our ongoing efforts to keep students and staff safe during winter weather, BISD is introducing a three-hour delay option for school start times. BISD now has the flexibility to start school two or three hours late when winter weather impacts travel conditions.

This additional delay provides more flexibility on Tuesdays through Fridays, allowing extra time for roads to be cleared and for everyone to travel safely to school.

Our team has been working hard behind the scenes to make this a viable option on snow and ice days—ensuring that schedules, transportation, and meals are all ready to go when the weather requires extra flexibility.

How to calculate your school start time:
  • A two-hour delay means you’ll add two hours to your regular start time.
  • A three-hour delay means you’ll add three hours to your regular start time.
  • ⏰ End times will remain the same—the school day will still end at the usual time.

Bus transportation:
  • If BISD announces buses are on snow routes - check the transportation page on our BISD website.
  • If buses are running on regular routes, add 2 or 3 hours to your usual pickup time based on the delay.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate winter weather together. Our goal is always the same: to get everyone to school safely.

❄️ December: Finish the Year Strong ❄️

As we move from fall into winter, December is a time to keep our routines steady and finish the calendar year strong. With the holiday season and shorter daylight hours, it’s easy for schedules to get busy — but staying connected and showing up each day helps students maintain their learning momentum.

We also know that life happens — winter colds, darker mornings, and busy family schedules can make it harder to get to school. Please reach out if your family is facing challenges such as transportation, illness, anxiety, or other stressors. We have caring staff, community partners, and resources ready to support you.

Together, let’s make this final stretch of 2025 a time of connection, consistency, and growth for every student.

Fall Taste Test

Farm to School Program Update! November Taste Test

Our farm to school team was excited to launch our first taste test of the year at Sakai last week! Tony, who leads the kitchen team at Sakai, piloted a pumpkin curry with chicken recipe with students who voted on their preference.

The recipe featured pumpkins grown at Suyematsu/Bainbridge Island Farms. Students overwhelmingly voted in favor of having the recipe offered at school lunch - comments included “It was so good I shoved it down!” “It’s so good!” “Really yummy!”. We love this real time interaction and feedback from students as a part of our Farm to School program.

It's a Wonderful Life

BHS Theater presents: It's a Wonderful Life

In our American culture, It’s a Wonderful Life is a natural for a stage adaptation. In our telling of the saga of George Bailey, he is the everyman from the city of Seattle, whose dreams of escape and adventure have been quashed by family obligation and civic duty amidst the background of the Boeing Bust (1969-1971). His guardian angel (in the form of a clairvoyant fortune teller) has to save him from despair and to remind him—by showing him what the world would have been like had he never been born—that his has been, after all, a wonderful life. This dramatization celebrates the American philosophy of life: hard work, fair play and the love and support of one's family and community will be rewarded.

Tickets are $12 and can be purchased online.

Remaining Dates & Times:

Bring Your Creative Spark: Help BISD

Bainbridge Island School District is beginning a project to update and refresh our district branding—work rooted in the themes emerging from our Strategic Planning Steering Committee. As we move toward implementing our new Strategic Plan, we want our visual identity to reflect the future we’re building together and help us engage our community for input and feedback.

We’re seeking volunteers with experience—or a strong interest—in design, illustration, branding, visual identity, or creative storytelling. This may include refining our logo, creating supporting graphics, and helping us think about how BISD shows up across digital and printed materials. If you enjoy creative work and would like to lend your skills, we’d love to connect.

Interested? Please reach out to Bridget Lockett at blockett@bisd303.org and we’ll follow up with next steps.

Thank you for considering sharing your talents as we align BISD’s brand with our strategic future!
