Hello Blakely Families,
As we enter the fall season, we’re looking forward to the joy, curiosity, and learning that this time of year always brings. At Blakely, our values of inclusion, equity, and diversity guide everything we do. We are deeply committed to creating a school community where every child and family feels seen, valued, and included, and where students learn not only about their own traditions but also about the many cultures, beliefs, and celebrations that make up our world. In short, we value opening windows for our students to see the world around them and beyond.
Over the past month, our staff have spent time discussing this together and offering thoughtful feedback to shape our decisions moving forward. With these discussions and our shared values in mind, we’re making a few shifts in how we approach the fall season this year. Our goal is to recognize the fun and excitement of the season while also ensuring that all students can participate comfortably and meaningfully, specifically around the Halloween holiday. Here’s what that will look like:
- Learning connections to Halloween are welcome but optional. Teachers may include seasonal activities like themed read-alouds, writing prompts, or math games in the weeks leading up to Halloween, but these will remain optional and connected to learning.
- Exploring global traditions is encouraged. Students will have opportunities to learn about other fall celebrations and traditions such as Día de los Muertos, Samhain, and more as part of our commitment to broadening cultural understanding.
- Since there is no school on Halloween itself this year, we ask that students not wear costumes to school in the days leading up to October 31.
- October celebrations in classrooms will center around fall themes. Class celebrations held during the week of Halloween will be a chance to share joy while also highlighting a classroom achievement (such as finishing a unit, preparing for conferences, or earning points as a class).
- As in years past, we will not hold a Halloween parade, allowing us to focus on activities that all students can enjoy and participate in fully.
We know that Halloween is a meaningful and fun time for many families, and we also know that it doesn’t hold the same significance for everyone. Our hope is that these changes reflect our commitment to creating a welcoming environment for every student while still embracing the excitement of the season.
Thank you for partnering with us as we continue to grow as a community that celebrates both joy and belonging. If you have any questions or feedback about these changes, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
