Note from the Principal

Dear x̌alilc Families,

Thank you for attending the Orca Splash on May 1st! It was fun seeing you and our young Orcas all around the school. I hope you enjoyed seeing how your students show up each day—it was a treat to watch them share a glimpse of their experiences with you!

A heartfelt thank you to Teresa Yetti and Melissa Kob who organized our Staff Appreciation Week. The Camp x̌alilc theme had everyone excited about summer ahead and the staff loved the flowers, lunch, snacks, and thoughtful tokens of appreciation around the building! Thanks to those who contributed to the pampering we all received—it truly felt like a luxury.

As we approach the end of the year, please keep an eye on the weekly newsletter for important event updates!

A note for 3rd and 4th grade families: Next week, our 4th graders will begin their Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA), followed by the 3rd graders the following week. These assessments run through the end of the month. While they offer a snapshot of student progress, we encourage all students to do their best and show what they know.

We use the assessment results to evaluate our instruction and identify areas where we can improve. This helps us adjust and target specific areas for growth as a staff.

At home, you can support your student(s) by ensuring they get plenty of rest, eat a healthy breakfast, pack nutritious snacks, and enjoy some physical activity after school. Arriving at school on time is especially important on assessment days, as the tests are given in the mornings, however, these are great habits to encourage every day!

We’re excited to see the growth and learning your students have achieved!

Wishing you a wonderful week ahead—fingers crossed for more sunshine and lovely weather!

Thank You! Staff Appreciation Week

Thank you so much for the incredible Staff Appreciation Week! We truly felt the love and thoughtfulness in every detail—from the fun camping theme to the daily treats and special x̌alilc notebook and lanyard.

Your creativity, effort, and kindness made each day feel like a celebration, and we are so grateful for the time and energy you put into making us feel appreciated.

It’s a joy to work in a community where the support from our PTO is so heartfelt and generous. Thank you again for making this week such a memorable one!

With gratitude,
The x̌alilc Staff

Bike to School Day

Bike to School Day

x̌alilc will be celebrating Bike & Walk to School Day this Friday, May 16!

Join other families in celebrating the beautiful weather and practicing alternative ways to arrive at school that promote health and help the environment. So get outside, get out of your car, and get your kids off the bus for the day!

The PTO with some help from Squeaky Wheels is organizing this event!

Join a group:
  • Who: Riders will be students and adults
  • Where: Ted Olson Preserve or Port Madison Lutheran Church
  • When: May 16 rain or shine!
  • Where: Bikes will hit the road at 7:20 to allow everyone plenty of time to arrive at school!

We are looking for a few bike-riding, volunteer-approved adults to help lead the rides from each location--you can sign up HERE if interested!

Be sure to give your kiddo’s bike a safety check before the day of the ride: Check brakes, tires, and gears. Classic Cycles has used trade-in bikes and they are able to pump up tires and check helmets for right fit.

Halilts Placement Input Form

Class Placement Input Form

The time of year has come for us to begin next year's placement process. If you have information about your child that would be helpful for us in making classroom assignments, we would like to hear from you. Please know, this form is OPTIONAL.

Your input will be considered in the placement decision and shared with the new classroom teacher. There are many factors that impact placement decisions: balance of gender, balance of students with specific learning needs, and class size.

REQUESTS FOR INDIVIDUAL TEACHERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. However, input regarding your child's learning style, preferred learning environment, social context or other factors the school may not be familiar with can be helpful to the placement team.  Please include ALL information that you believe may be relevant to placement, even if the same information has been shared in previous years.

Please remember that teachers, specialists, principal, and counselor will be reviewing this form.

Input must be submitted no later than WEDNESDAY, MAY 28, 2025.

ABC Check-In

Help x̌alilc win the ABC Challenge!

We are making progress! 45% of x̌alilc families have responded! Help us reach 100%. This annual process lets us know that your student(s) are returning to our schools for 2025-26 and allows parents/guardians to review annual information.

The ABCs must be completed* for all students attending BISD schools in 2025-26, including both new and returning students. Access the ABCs by logging into your Family Access account. It should take about 15 minutes (or less!) to complete.

If you need assistance with the ABC process (such as translation, accessing technology, or other questions), please get in touch with Sheila Jakubik, at sjakubik@bisd303.org or call 206-780-3010.

NOT RETURNING? If your student is not returning to BISD schools next fall, please email office manager, Sheila Jakubik, at sjakubik@bisd303.org or call 206-780-3010.

*Student class placement/class schedules will not be released in August until the ABCs are completed. But why delay? Go ahead and take care of it today!
