October Happenings
Posted by Beth Crawford-Mass on 10/2/2016
Homework
Will go home Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday each week. There will be times that I allow students to complete and submit their math homework page in class. Your child will still have the responsibility and routine of bringing their folder back and forth each day.
Important information coming home
Please look for a picture envelope, our updated daily schedule, our calendar, and the chapter 2 overview for math on Monday.
Language Arts
We will continue to read informative mentor texts and your child will be taking notes from a video that is all about the life cycle of a painted lady butterfly. We are building our vocabulary and forming an understanding of the process of metamorphosis. Students are becoming experts on this process so that they can inform their readers through their writing.
DRA testing
Our class has been rescheduled for the developmental reading assessment for October 4-5. I am looking forward to the opportunity to listen to each student read! We will discuss reading levels and goals at parent conferences.
Math
We wrapped up chapter 1 this week and had some fun reviewing the chapter with a buddy game using white boards. Students raced to be the first to hold their "sign" up with the correct answer. Teams had the chance to agree or disagree with the answers and it was great to listen to students share their thinking and understanding with one another!
We will begin chapter 2, all about number patterns, in math this week. Please look over the orange chapter overview going home on Monday.
Science
Each student noticed a chrysalis at their desk last week and they are being transferred to a butterfly garden! Students will be watching a time-lapse video of a caterpillar forming a chrysalis this week and the hope is that many of their questions will be answered. We posted “Questions and Wonders” about our chrysalis’. Students wondered why some had a red dot in their container or why it looked like pieces of their caterpillar were in the container. We have a lot of fascinating facts to learn this week!
School field trips and events
We have a lot happening this month! A reminder that all parents and guardians interested in helping out in the classroom or on field trips need to complete (or update) the process to volunteer. The steps for this process were emailed home last week.
