Student Led Conferences
Wednesday, January 16 - 8:30am - 12:30pm, 1:30pm - 3:30pm
Thursday, January 17 - 3:00pm - 7:00pm
Friday, January 18 - 8:30am - 12:30pm
Thirty minute conference appointments with your child will be followed by a thirty minute open period to meet with teachers individually for brief discussions, if so desired. There is no school on these three days. All WMS students/parents/guardians are encouraged and expected to participate in conferences. We hope to achieve 100% attendance! Research shows that student-led conferences encourage students to take responsibility for their learning and perform better in school. Parent attendance and support is critical to the success of this program.
The student accountability fostered by this model teaches responsibility and encourages students to develop a sense of ownership for their progress. More importantly, it encourages students and their parents or guardians to engage in discussions centered on academic progress. SLCs also build self-confidence and provide training for their future.
HOW WILL IT WORK?
Your child will present a portfolio of work to you. The portfolio is a collection of representative work and self-reflective evaluations from all subject areas. Your child has been meeting regularly in a Seminar group with a teacher who provides guidance in organizing, preparing and practicing the presentation of this portfolio to you. Students will also share progress reports, progress on their smart goals and set a new goal for spring semester with you. We hope that they have already shared their six goals for fall semester. You will set a goal for spring semester at the conference.
Thirty-minute blocks of time are scheduled for each conference. The teacher will act as a facilitator but will not be directly involved in the conference. At the conclusion of each thirty minute conference you will have the opportunity to meet with any teacher on an individual basis for up to five minutes. If you require a conversation that will take more than five minutes, you will need to schedule another time to meet with the teacher. We hope that you have already been in communication with your child’s teachers if you have a concern.
HOW DO I SIGN UP?
Students will be getting information on how to access a Google doc to sign up for a specific timeslot in our seminar on Friday, January 4th. Please sit down with your student and select a time that works for all of you to attend. As mentioned above, there are 14 different appointment times to choose from ranging from 8:30 am to 7:00 pm.
Please work with your student to pick the best time for your family.
Please contact your student's 4th period teacher with questions or scheduling requests/changes.
Your student will have access to a document that looks like the picture below via their 4th Period/Seminar Class.
