The winners of the 6th District Congressional Art Competition were announced and two BHS students won top honors.

Angelina Kollodge won first place and will be flown to Washington D.C. for a celebration and her photo will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol building for a year. Angelina's image is called Fierce Silence.

ANGELINA:

What inspired you to create your winning photo?
As a project for my AP Photography class, I created 15 photos with the leading question of "How do different women express femininity?" I had shown a mosaic of differing personalities and appearances but had failed to show the importance of embracing culture. Embracing your culture does not just mean being proud, rather, it means standing up for those you love who have been wronged. With this in mind, I created my winning photo titled "Fierce Silence".

What was your artist's statement for the photo?
This image represents the silencing of the Native American Community regarding missing and murdered indigenous women in the U.S. The red handprint symbolizes the lives lost and the blood of her ancestors/present tribe.

Maddy Goodro won third place and her photo will be displayed in the state capitol building in Olympia for a year. Her image is called Desert Beauty.

MADDY:
What inspired you to create your winning photo?
The inspiration behind my photo was a project I was doing regarding expressing a feeling of unease throughout photography. I was looking to do this by creating atmosphere in my photos. I thought the desert puts me immediately at unease, so how can I also have a strong atmosphere in a photo of it?

What was your artist's statement for the photo?
This photo is from Joshua Tree National Park, taken mid-winter as the sun was setting on the desert. I used the stormy looking sky to create a distinct atmosphere and used the golden sunlight to contrast with it.

Congrats Angelina and Maddy for creating such breathtaking art.
