Grab & Go Meals Recap of the Program

When the final school bell rang on March 11, 2020, we had no idea that our school buildings would stay shuttered for the remainder of the school year.

While much of the school experience transferred to online offerings, one thing that remained in-person was our meal service. Our team quickly transitioned to Grab & Go Meals, a drive-thru style for food service. Funded under a special national waiver to the USDA's Summer Food Service Program, the program allowed states across the nation the ability to implement food service for youth while schools were closed due to COVID-19. The program was open to all Bainbridge Island youth, regardless of income or need.

Grab & Go Meals quickly became a highlight to these challenging times. Not only did the program provide nutritious meals (both lunch and breakfast), but it provided a structure to days that could otherwise seem endless. Shared one parent, "We have been coming almost daily since the beginning, and it has made a big difference in our daily routine and quality of life."

Grab & Go Meals wrap up on Thursday, June 18, and we estimate that once the finally family pulls out of the Ordway parking lot, BISD will have served more than 106,00 meals since the program began on March 18, 2020.

If not for our dedicated and enthusiastic staff, Grab & Go Meals would not have been possible.

  • Thank you to the Food Services' Assembly Crew at Sakai who prepared the meals (more than 10,000 individual items placed in meal bags daily!)
  • Thank you to the Food Services' Distribution Crew at Ordway who distributed the meals with smiles behind their masks (on average, they served one meal every five seconds!)
  • Thank you to the Transportation Team who drove meals to students who were unable to get to Ordway (traveling 98 miles daily!)
  • Thank you to the Custodian Crew who was responsible for setting up the PPE stations, the disinfection of all tables and carts, cleaning kitchen floors and assisting with loading and unloading district vehicles.

Please join us in extending our appreciation to the amazing Grab & Go Team!
