Sakai's 'Leaving Our Island' unit makes the news

March 2, 2017 --
Yesterday, Sakai 6th graders put down their history books and instead learned firsthand about a slice of history. The 6th graders welcomed a group of special visitors into their classrooms: people who were interned during World War II.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Japanese Internment and Bainbridge Island was the first location where people were forced to leave. The Sakai students heard stories about packing up and leaving the island, what the internment camps were like and how it was to return to Bainbridge Island.
A news segment about the Leaving Our Island unit aired on March 1 on King 5 news. You can watch it here.
