Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! We are looking forward to welcoming everyone to Sakai in a few short weeks.

I am excited to serve students, families, and staff members as the Dean of Students at Sakai. This is my 18th year in education, 12th year in the Bainbridge Island School District, and my 4th year at Sakai; over the past 12 years in our school district I have taught English at BHS and served as the Instructional Coach and Differentiation Specialist at Sakai. I am looking forward to a great year.

When you are walking through the hallways at Sakai, you can feel the joy and energy that is inherent in our fifth and sixth graders. Our students use their curiosity to explore and develop their skills and thinking throughout the school year.

Sakai offers rich experiences to all of our students. We have numerous programs and events throughout the year that offer experiential learning opportunities. A few of my favorite programs include our TREX recycling program, our Leaving Our Island forum, and the Sakai Reads discussions.

In addition to our tradition of rich programs and events, we have also developed new opportunities. Over the past few years, we have created differentiated options offered through tiered writing assignments and reading options based on rich conceptual themes. Students can choose writing prompts that offer different levels of challenge to find a just-right fit. We have created assignments and added resources to develop close reading and annotation skills. By reading articles at varying reading levels on Newsela, students can read at their individual independent reading level.

One of our exciting new programs is our mentoring program. Sakai students have the opportunity to work with BHS student mentors in their classrooms. Over the past two years, I have developed a program that cultivates a connection, point of support, and source of inspiration between our high school and intermediate school students by placing BHS mentors into 5th and 6th-grade classrooms to work with our fifth and sixth grade students.

Please feel free to call, stop by and talk, or email me with any questions that you might have. I will be at Sakai every day except Thursdays. I believe that partnerships between families and schools help our students to flourish.

    Sincerely,

    Kim Kooistra
