Hello and Welcome! This is my thirteenth year as a school counselor and I've worked at Sakai for eleven years. It's such an honor to be part of the Sakai team, and I think 5th and 6th grade students are absolutely the best age to work with.
As one of two Sakai counselors I work with students, staff and parents to foster the social, emotional, and academic success of all students. I support students by meeting with them individually, in groups, and in classrooms. I'm available to consult with teachers and parents to proactively plan for academic success. The counseling team facilitates academic planning and student study team meetings to address impediments to students' educational, personal and social growth. We recognize that entering Sakai is a significant school transition for students and their families, and we want them to feel welcome, valued, supported, and encouraged. Continuing to build social/emotional competency is an essential task for 5th and 6th graders. I strive to empower students with problem solving and conflict resolution skills, and self advocacy skills whenever the opportunity/need arises. I work to support teachers and parents in the task of supporting development of organizational skills and emotional resiliency. I collaborate with professional organizations, other school and private counselors, medical practitioners, and school personnel to create a best-practice approach to improving student academic achievement. At Sakai we have a counseling department mission statement. I have worked to promote the adoption of programs such as the Olweus anti-bullying program. I am pleased to say we are in our fifth year of implementing COHO time, the social emotional learning lessons that integrate Olweus principals.I received my undergraduate degree from University of New Mexico, my M.S. in health education from the University of Washington, and my M.Ed from UW. In addition to my time at Sakai, I was the head counselor at Woodward Middle School for two years, and a mental health counselor at Bainbridge Youth Services for five years. I've been a mediator, a mediation consultant and trainer, a college instructor, and youth sports coach. I am the parent of two wonderful young men who are BHS, and UW grads. I have lived on Bainbridge for 26 years. When I'm not working I enjoy gardening, photography, traveling, kayaking, and hiking.Attached is a PDF of a presentation Ronnelle gives each fall, entitled "Organizing the Disorganized Brain". This provides information about how to support the development of organizational skills during the challenging time of pre-adolescence.
