    Principal Message

    August 2021

    Dear Sakai Intermediate Families,

I am excited to welcome you to the 2021-2022 school year! For those of you returning to us, welcome back! For those of you new to our school, I think you will find Sakai an extraordinary place for your child to grow and learn.

First of all, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Drew Crandall and I am the Principal of Sakai Intermediate School. I have been in education for 17 years as a principal, assistant principal, instructional coach and teacher. My wife and I are originally from Michigan and moved to Bainbridge Island eight years ago after living in Seattle for many years. We have two children in the Bainbridge Island School District, a 5th-grader and a 1st-grader. As a family we enjoy camping, skiing, playing pickleball, cheering on the Sounders, and walking our dog, Juno. I love living on Bainbridge Island and getting the opportunity to serve our community.

This will be my second year at Sakai, and while last year was certainly an uncommon introduction to a new school, I feel so lucky to be working with such thoughtful, caring, and supportive staff, families and students. We are hopeful that this year will be a continual return to normalcy, however we will still have some health and safety guidelines to follow that will make this year another unique one. You can be assured, though, that the care and intentionality our staff bring to our students will look the same as it always has at Sakai.

Our goal is to provide a caring and collaborative learning environment for your child. We take the responsibility of educating your student seriously and with great intention. Education is a partnership and I greatly look forward to working with you to ensure a high level of learning for your student this year. Your support is crucial to your student’s success.

Please know that my door is always open. I encourage you to contact me with any questions, concerns, or simply to introduce yourself.

I look forward to a wonderful year of growth and learning!

    Drew Crandall
