Hello and welcome to a great new school year!
My name is Kristin Collins and I am lucky to be your child's teacher. This will be my 22nd year in the classroom and my seventh year at Wilkes. I am thrilled to be a member of such an amazing Wilkes community! This year, I will be teaching third grade, and will do so in a teaching partnership with Mrs. Hoag. We will share a lot of information about how this works, but essentially, I will be teaching all of the math and social studies to my homeroom kids and Mrs. Hoag's homeroom kids and Mrs. Hoag will teach literacy (reading and writing) and science to both groups. I have used this model for the past five years and have found that it is very beneficial for student learning. It has also allowed us to become experts in our curriculum areas. In addition to this, I will be hosting a student teacher this fall. Many of you know Mrs. Beermann from our front office. She will be joining us for most of first semester to learn the ins and outs of teaching elementary kids. I can't wait to work with her!!
To share a little bit about myself, I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Washington (Go Huskies!) and my Master's in Teaching degree from Seattle University. I am also a National Board Certified Teacher, with a focus as a Middle Childhood Generalist (which means all subject areas for kids ages 7-12). I moved to Bainbridge eight years ago from Snohomish, Washington to be closer to my folks, who live here on the island. My family and I love it here!! My husband Sean also works on the island and we have a son, Luke, a sophomore at BHS, and a daughter, Eleanor, a senior(!!) at BHS. In my spare time I love to read, travel, go to the movies and theater, and sing second alto in the Bainbridge Chorale. I am looking forward to working with you and your child to make this a memorable year full of great learning and fun!
