Drama I

Length/Credit: 1 semester/0.5 credit

Note: This elective course is open to students in grades 9-12.

Description: Drama I introduces the student to the fundamentals of acting in the theater. The course focuses on activities that generate trust and flexibility, build confidence and improve concentration and cooperative skills. Improvisation is the primary technique used in this class with emphasis on non-verbal and verbal communication, movement exercises focused on space, shape rhythm, character development and story elements in improvised and memorized monologue and scene work. Students will be required to perform improvisational exercises and scenes in front of their peers within the class and participate in peer evaluation of both improvisation and memorized monologue and scene performances. The course also includes a unit on play writing, focused on the creation of original characters, their intentions and overall objectives.

Drama II

Length/Credit: 1 semester/0.5 credit

Note: This elective course is open to students in grades 9-12.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Drama I.

Description: Drama II builds on the skills in Intro to Drama with the primary focus on character analysis in both monologue and scene work from published plays and/or student generated plays. Students analyze contrasting views of characters, acting as “re-acting,” and the role of action/activity to define character. The students work on strategies for memorizing, preparing and interpreting monologues and scenes for both auditions and performances. The course includes a unit on play writing, focused on the creation of original characters, their intentions and overall objectives. Students will perform student-generated “one-acts” as their final project in this class.

Concert Choir

Length/Credit: 1 year/1.0 Fine Arts credit

Description: Choir is an excellent way to perform in a musical ensemble, advance skills in analyzing and understanding music, sing in a group, and perfect the sound. We cover a wide range of styles, including classical music, pop, musical theater, and alternative styles. Participating in choir develops a better understanding of vocal technique, blending and balancing voices, and preparing a unique and dynamic form of art. Depending on ability levels, we will take the choir traveling to performances and competitions throughout the year.

Concert Band (9th grade band)

Length/Credit: 1 year/1.0 Fine Arts credit

Fee: $25 uniform fee for all band members; instrument fee if applicable ($75 for the year, $40 for the semester, and $20 for a tryout period). Note: we have scholarships available for students in need.

Prerequisite: Middle-school proficiency on a standard wind or orchestral string instrument.

Description: Concert Band is the next level of music for incoming freshmen who play wind instruments. Percussionists should sign up for Percussion Ensemble. This class is part one in a series of band courses at BHS aimed to prepare some of the best high school musicians in the state. We put on concerts, play at assemblies, compete in festivals, and much more. It is possible to participate in band and also do other sports and clubs at BHS. Every other spring, band students have the option of participating in a major band trip. Recent trips include San Francisco, New York City, and Disneyland. All required events are clearly outlined at the start of the year. Attendance at all required dress rehearsals and concerts will be graded. Participation in the award winning Spartan Marching Band is optional. Orchestral strings are allowed in Concert Band.

Symphonic Band (10th-12th grade intermediate band)

Length/Credit: 1 year/1.0 Fine Arts credit

Fee: $25 uniform fee for all band members; instrument fee if applicable ($75 for the year, $40 for the semester, and $20 for a tryout period). Note: we have scholarships available for students in need.

Prerequisite: Students are placed by BHS band instructor.

Description: Symphonic Band is the intermediate band class for students in 10th, 11th and 12th grades. Placement into Symphonic Band is by instructor permission only. Students in Symphonic Band put on concerts, play at assemblies, compete in festivals, and much more. It is possible to participate in band and also do other sports and clubs at BHS. Wind Ensemble (11th and 12th grade advanced band)

Length/Credit: 1 year/1.0 Fine Arts credit

Fee: $25 uniform fee for all band members; instrument fee if applicable ($75 for the year, $40 for the semester, and $20 for a tryout period). Note: we have scholarships available for students in need.

Prerequisite: Students are placed by BHS band instructor.

Description: The Wind Ensemble is one of Kitsap County’s premier student performing groups. Students in this ensemble graduate with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in collegiate music programs. Placement into Wind Ensemble is by instructor permission only. Students in Wind Ensemble put on concerts, play at assemblies, compete in festivals, and much more. It is possible to participate in band and also do other sports and clubs at BHS. All required events are clearly outlined at the start of the year. Attendance at all required dress rehearsals and concerts will be graded. Participation in the award winning Spartan Marching Band and the big spring band trip are both optional. Strings are allowed with special permission.

Percussion Ensemble (9th-12th grade percussionists)

Length/Credit: 1 year/1.0 Fine Arts credit

Fee: $25 uniform fee for all band members; $75 school instrument maintenance fee. Note: we have scholarships available for students in need.

Prerequisite: Middle school proficiency (or higher) on percussion instruments, OR prior piano lessons, OR ability to read music on the electric or acoustic bass. Instructor permission recommended.

Note: Participation in Marching Band is required for Percussion Ensemble members without prior exemption from the instructor.

Description: Bainbridge High School has one of the strongest percussion programs in Kitsap County. Students in this class work as a team to prepare music for concerts, contests, assemblies, and other functions. Parts for performances are assigned based on individual skill level. Students grow into accomplished musicians as they mature in a supportive environment that includes help from their more experienced peers and the instructor. Older students are expected to mentor younger students. It is possible to participate in band and also do other sports and clubs at BHS. Every other spring, band students have the option of participating in a major band trip. Recent trips include San Francisco, New York City, and Disneyland. All required events are clearly outlined at the start of the year. Attendance at all required dress rehearsals and concerts will be graded.

Zero-period Jazz Band (9th-12th grade mixed ensembles)

Length/Credit: 1 year/1.0 Fine Arts credit

Fee: $10 uniform maintenance fee; instrument fee if applicable ($75 for the year, $40 for the semester, and $20 for a tryout period). Note: we have scholarships available for students in need.

Prerequisite: Co-enrollment in another band class is required for participation in the jazz program.

Description: Jazz Band is a zero period class that begins every day at 7:30am. Students are expected to arrange for their transportation accordingly. The Bainbridge Jazz Collective is a robust umbrella course that contains two separate jazz bands and a number of smaller jazz combos. Students in these groups prepare music for concerts, assemblies, contests, and other functions throughout the year. Attendance at all required rehearsals, performances, and community events will be graded. It is possible to participate in band and also do other sports and clubs at BHS. Participation in the award winning Spartan Marching Band and major spring band trip is optional.
