French

French Level I

Length/Credit: 1 year/1.0 credit

Fee: Students are required to purchase a workbook and tape manual to accompany textbook. Price will be confirmed after registration.

Description:
These beginning courses will familiarize the student with basic language structures and vocabulary. The text includes a tape program and workbook. Memorization of vocabulary and mastery of grammatical structures are required. Oral articulation in class is required and students will build proficiency in speaking, reading, listening and writing. The courses also include units that will increase student understanding of the culture, history, and modern French society as well as the 40 other French speaking nations in the world. Supplemental materials include an on-line site giving extra help in structure, pronunciation and vocabulary building, plus the use of songs, poetry, short stories and films.

French Level II

Length/Credit: 1 year/1.0 credit

Prerequisite: French Level I

Note:
Placement test is required for students new to the world language program at BHS.

Description:
Second year progresses into more complex tenses and grammatical structures. There is more emphasis on free oral expression with skits and dialogues, comprehension of written stories, followed by oral and written response. The program continues to include the text, workbook, an on-line site plus other components. Continued study of the French speaking cultures with small projects, videos and films.

French Level III

Length/Credit: 1 year/1.0 credit

Prerequisite: French Level II

Description:
This course continues further in depth with French grammar, more tenses, vocabulary and communication/oral proficiency skills. It is suggested that students have a good French/English, English/French dictionary. Students will study other Francophone countries and do supplemental readings from a variety of magazine and newspaper articles on current events, short stories and poetry. There will be an independent project, student-written skits and dialogues, videos, and feature films that complement the chapters’ cultural themes.

Advanced French: French History and Literature to the Revolution

(Curriculum A: offered in even numbered graduation years; ie. Fall 2017-Spring 2018)

Prerequisite: French Level III

Placement test is required for students new to the world language program at BHS. Fifth-year French students may take one semester or both of Advanced French.

Description:
Students will gain deeper understanding of France’s rich historic past, beginning with the cave drawings in Lascaux, France, and continuing through the centuries to the French Revolution of 1789. Key historic figures and events will be studied, along with development of French literature. Greater proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening will be developed.

Advanced French: French History and Literature from 1715 through Modern Times

(Curriculum B Offered in odd numbered graduation years; ie. Fall 2018-Spring 2019)

Length/Credit: 1 year/1.0 credit.

Prerequisite: French Level III

Placement test is required for students new to the world language program at BHS. Fifth-year French students may take one semester or both of Advanced French.

Description:
This curriculum will focus on the history of France from 1715 to the present and the literature of that time period. Greater proficiency in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening continue to be developed in this program.

Spanish

Spanish Level I

Length/Credit: 1 year/1.0 credit

Description:
This course familiarizes the students with basic language structures and vocabulary. Students will focus on building a foundation for fluency through practice in the following areas: basic sentence structure, conversation, reading and writing assignments, skits, presentations, and essential vocabulary for home, school, travel and everyday life. Memorization of vocabulary and grammatical structures is required; oral participation is expected. Both Hispanic culture and grammatical structures are emphasized through supplemental Spanish workbooks, films, and music. BHS offers 5 years of Spanish. Students who plan to take full advantage of our program should start in their freshman year or earlier at Woodward Middle School or Hyla Middle School.

Spanish Level II

Description:
This course is a continuation of Spanish Level I with its main focus being expanding vocabulary, the grammatical structures of the Spanish language, including all the major verb tenses, and a continuation of Hispanic culture. Grammar is taught with an emphasis on oral expression, comprehension, vocabulary building, writing and reading. Verbal participation is a major component of this course.

Spanish Level III

Length/Credit: 1 year/1.0 credit

Prerequisite: Spanish Level II with a C- grade or above at BHS.

Advanced Spanish – Spain: Culture, Civilization and Literature

Espana : Su Cultura, Civilizacion, y Literatura

Offered Fall Semester only

Length/Credit: 1 semester/0.5 credit

Prerequisite: Spanish Level III with a C- grade or above.

Advanced Spanish courses are not sequential and may be taken in any order. Placement test is required for students new to the world language program at BHS. Spanish students in their 4th or 5th year of the language may take one semester or both.

Description:
This course is taught in Spanish. It is an overview of the history, geography, culture and literature of Spain from the Iberians to the present. The course explores a variety of genres and literary movements. Students will keep a portfolio throughout the course, which will be presented as a culminating project at the end of the course. Grammatical concepts will be reviewed and introduced. This course consists of thematic units such as the diversity of the Spanish Nation (languages, people, food, music, etc) the Literature of the Gold Age/Twentieth Century, and the Spanish Civil War as well as current events. All authentic materials used will reinforce the students’ proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking the target language.

Advanced Spanish - Latin America: Contemporary Issues and Literature

Prerequisite: Spanish Level III with a C- grade or above.

Description:
This course is taught in Spanish. It is an overview of the history, geography culture and literature of Latin America from the conquest to the present. The main areas of focus of the course are geomgraphy, the indigenous peoples of Latin America, the conquest, and current issues. This course uses readings of authentic materials to reinforce the student's’ proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking. Grammatical concepts will be reviewed and introduced.

AP Spanish Language

(Note: offered only during zero period)
Length/Credit: 1 year/1.0 credit

Fee: $95 fee for AP Exam. Students are required to purchase a workbook to accompany textbook. Price will be confirmed after registration.

Prerequisite: Spanish Level III with a B grade or above and teacher recommendation.

Description:
The AP Spanish Language course is intended for students who wish to develop proficiency and integrate their language skills, using authentic materials and sources. Students who enroll should have an intermediate knowledge of the language and cultures of Spanish-speaking peoples and should have attained a reasonable proficiency in using the language. The AP Spanish Language course will prepare students to demonstrate their level of Spanish proficiency. The course is meant to be comparable to third year (fifth or sixth semester) college and university courses that focus on speaking and writing in the target language at an advanced level. The class is conducted in Spanish and is offered only during zero period.
