• Mosaic K-2 Composing with Popsicle Sticks

compose 1 Isaac  Students reviewed steady beat versus rhythm.  We read a story from the Freddy the Frog series about rhythms going fast and slow.  The pictures looked like popsicle sticks, so the kids used the same idea and made up their own mini songs.  We eventually worked in partners.  Finally, we made one giant class rhythm piece together! We had fun practicing our class song fast, slow, forwards, and backwards.

We put on a show!  Odyssey 3-4 worked very hard in class to create the puppet musical, Tikki Tikki Tembo.  Everyone started by learning the songs in a band.  Then, we would all read the script and work on the music.  Next, we all tried the puppets.  Finally, we had input on which parts of the production we wanted to participate in the most.
We also learned stage directions, what a director does, how to be a part of a performance, what stage cues are, and how to be a part of a band.  A special thanks goes to Maggie for the awesome puppets and to Paul for letting us borrow his shadow screen!
After break we're getting ready to switch to marimbas!
    cards3 Head and Shoulders
Odyssey 1-2 started class off by singing and moving to an African American song, "Head and Shoulders Baby."  We then read a jazz book about scat singing and finished class with scat improvisation cards.  Students broke into pairs and shared their improvisation scat words with the class.                                                                     cards

    orff 3 orff orff
We're working very hard on playing two or more Orff parts with good technique!  We closed class by very quickly singing, "Frosty."  Next week, we will be picking up on, "The Cookie Song" and reviewing what we learned this week.
    Weekly Overview:
K-2- Working on playing 2+ parts while singing, thinking about what it looks like to be performing
3-4- Working on recorder technique, playing recorders with accompaniment, playing recorders as a duet, group singing
5-6-  Working on blending sounds and parts as a group, adding extra percussion parts to our songs, adding dynamics with technique
M.A. 7-8- Exploring jazz, improvisation, and scat (marimbas, voices, and movement)
Next week, the kids will also see a quick glimpse of this icy orchestra in Sweden.  It's a quick CNN clip  about musical careers and unique instruments.
