The BHS Speech and Debate Team is open to all students and is a great way to work on communication skills and then use those skills competing in debate tournaments. The team participates in the local debate circuit, attending about 10 local tournaments from Walla Walla to Bellevue, with additional support for individual participation in national events in places like Stanford or Minneapolis.

BHS has a strong history of debate, over the past ten years BHS has won State in 3A seven times. Our debaters are frequently in the top 10% of debaters at tournaments, and often receive awards for exceptional speaking skills.

The primary focus of the team is Lincoln Douglas (LD) debate; however, all debaters are also encouraged to participate in Individual Events (Speech) such as Expository, Impromptu, or Extemporaneous speaking. We are also open to individuals wishing to do the other formats of debate (policy and public forum), but have less experience with them.

Practices are one hour long, and held once or twice a week during the main season (Oct-Mar) and once a week in the off season (remainder of the school year). They will often involve lecturing, group work, practicing drills or mock debates. We also assemble cases during practice, although successful debaters also spend their own free time writing and researching positions. Contact the coach or team captains for information on when and where practices are held, or if you have any questions/concerns.
