The Bainbridge Island School District's Developmental Preschool is a 4-day-a-week program (Tuesday-Friday) that is 2 1/2 hours per day. Programs are currently running at both Ordway Elementary and Wilkes Elementary. The program is an inclusion program, meaning that there are peer models and students that qualify for special education services in all of the classes. Our classrooms have high teacher-to-student ratios. Our program focuses on meeting developmental benchmarks in social/emotional development, communication, pre-academics, motor skills, and adaptive development. Our teachers believe strongly in the importance of discovery through play and imagination, as well as routine and structure throughout the day. The preschool teachers also work with kindergarten teachers in the district to target behaviors and skills that they feel are important for kindergarten readiness.
Tuition for peer models for the 2019-2020 school year is $2600 per year or $260.00 per month for 10 months.
If a child is found eligible for special education services, the following services may be provided based on the needs of the child:
Communication Development - The Speech and Language Pathologist may work with the child and family to develop an understanding of verbal language, increase complexity and appropriateness of expression, and to promote clear articulation.
Motor Development - The Occupational Therapist and/or Physical Therapist may work with the child, family and education staff to design preschool activities that promote fine, gross, visual- and oral-motor skill development, as well as sensory-motor intervention.
Social/Self Help/Pre-Academic Development - The child may be provided with a variety of developmentally appropriate activities designed to promote cognitive and self-help skills, as well as positive social interaction. Intervention will be designed based on a child’s strengths and interests. We are now accepting applications for peer models for the 2019-2020 school year. Applications for the 2019-2020 school year will be accepted until March 25th, 2019. Peer model spots are limited and priority placement is given to children of staff members and children already enrolled in the program and continuing for a second year. Placements are made on a space available basis and a lottery will be held after March 25th if there is more interest than spots available. After March 25th, rolling placement in the program will be made on a space available basis. Please direct questions and applications to:Maria Kuffel, M.
