Announcements

  • Letter sent July 3, 2020:

    Dear BISD Community,
Three weeks ago, I shared with you that BISD hoped to have a framework for the 2020-21 school year in place by July 3rd. Although we are very close, our plans aren’t quite finalized. However, I wanted to give you an update on where we are in our planning and what you can expect over the next couple of weeks.

Teams composed of BISD staff, parents, school board members, and administrators have been working daily since June 22nd in order to determine what our school year will look like next year. To tackle the complexities of this work, we divided into three teams:
    • Team A:  Logistics & implementation of OSPI guidelines
    • Team B: Different education delivery models & scheduling options
    • Team C: Distance Learning

These teams are working collaboratively and in concert with one another. As a reminder, BISD must work within the guidelines put forth by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Department of Health. These guidelines are complex, but some examples include:

    • Practicing social distancing (six feet)
    • Wearing personal protective equipment by staff, students and visitors
    • Enhanced cleaning and sanitizing of school facilities

We have narrowed down a few possibilities for next year's schedule and we want to share with you the factors playing into our decision:

    • Logistical elements (i.e.square footage of classrooms, necessary safety precautions for students and staff, daily screening)
    • Models to support learning (i.e. how to best meet the instructional needs of our students in the safest manner possible, how to provide differentiated student support)
    • Distance learning (i.e. research-based instructional programming, equitable access to learning remotely)

Next week I plan to share our specific plans for our 2020-21 learning models in greater detail. At this time, we know families and students will have a choice between two options:

    1. A hybrid program utilizing both in-person and distance learning
    2. A full time, at-home learning experience using online curriculum (i.e. Edgenuity) and monitored by BISD teachers

We understand that both of these options come with their own set of challenges, and we appreciate the candor families shared with us in our recent survey. Thank you to the 1,850+ guardians (representing 3,100+ students) who completed the survey. Your feedback has been valuable in informing our decisions and our next steps. For example, we know that 31% of families responded that the need for childcare was important. Because of this, BISD is collaborating with local childcare providers so they can help fill any gaps typically covered by the traditional school schedule.

These past four months have been challenging for our students, staff, and families. You all weigh heavily on our minds as we plan for the next school year. While it will be a school year much different from the past, the fundamental aspects of what makes BISD such a strong school district remain in place — a place that nurtures strong minds, strong hearts. and a strong community.

Thanks for reading. More information will be coming soon.

Enjoy your 4th of July weekend,
    Peter Bang-Knudsen
    Superintendent

  • Annual Back-to-School Check-in

Parents, please complete the Annual Back-to-School Check-In (ABC) process for your student(s).

This allows us to collect information about students returning to the district for the next school year. Having an accurate understanding of the number of returning students helps us determine staffing, class size and building capacity to better serve the needs of our students.

All current BISD parents: Access the ABC process on your computer through Skyward, or on your mobile device by choosing "Desktop" access in the Skyward mobile app.

Parents of new students to the district for the 2020-21 School Year (kindergarteners, transfer students): Access the ABC process after July 25, 2020. (That's when new students are added to our system.)

The ABC process also allows the district to fulfill annual notification requirements for public schools in Washington State in an efficient manner.
IMPORTANT: The ABC process must be completed and submitted to the district in order to access your student's class placement for next year. Class placements and schedules will be available in late August.

If your student is not returning next year, please let the office manager at your child's school know.
