MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION

Multicultural Education Goals:

The goals of the multicultural education program are to have each student:

  • Feel valued and respected;
  • Be successful, both academically and socially;
  • Recognize and understand diverse perspectives;
  • Make meaningful contributions in a democratic society.

Multicultural Advisory Committee (MAC)

MAC has been a standing committee of the Bainbridge Island School District since 1986 and plays an important role in:

  • providing guidance to the district in developing, maintaining and assessing a comprehensive K‑12 multicultural education program;
  • helping to maintain effective working relationships between the district and the diverse communities on Bainbridge Island;
  • promoting multicultural awareness and understanding in the schools and community; and
  • striving to provide every student with equal educational opportunity.

The committee meets approximately once per month, with 3 of those meetings designed as "joint meetings" with the district's Multicultural Lead Teachers.

Responsibilities of the Multicultural Lead Teacher:
  • Raise awareness of multicultural goals and promote multicultural education events and activities in the school.
  • Participate in district or school-sponsored multicultural events and programs.
  • Connect school staff with multicultural resources that are available in the building, the district and the community.
  • Keep informed of and communicate current practices, policies, and issues in multicultural education to other lead teachers and staff members within the school.
  • Attend monthly meetings: 6-7 Multicultural Lead Teacher meetings and 3 Multicultural Advisory Committee/Lead Teacher joint meetings.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Multicultural Advisory Council and Lead Teachers and the staff, students and parents at the school.
