Curriculum Information for 2nd Grade

Here is some specific information on the curriculum our district uses for 2nd grade. Of course, good instruction uses a variety of methods and materials to teach each subject, however this gives you a good basis of what is expected of second graders.

Reading

BISD has newly adopted the Good Habits Great Readers reading program, which focuses on habits good readers use. The themes are:Great readers see themselves as readers, Great readers make sense of text, Great readers use what they know, Great readers understand how
stories work, Great readers read to learn, Great readers monitor and organize ideas and information, & Great readers think critically about books. Each unit ties in literature, writing, and phonics skills and is taught in both small group and whole group lessons.

Writing

In second grade we focus on different aspects of writing such as: personal, subject, story, and poetry writing.

Math

The BISD uses the Investigations curriculum for math. For second grade their units focus on: Mathematical Thinking, Coins, Coupons, and Combinations (The Number System), Does it Walk, Crawl, or Swim? (Sorting and Classifying Data), Shapes, Halves, and Symmetry (Geometry and Fractions), Putting Together and Taking Apart (Addition and Subtraction), How Long? How Far? (Measurement), How Many Pockets? How Many Teeth? (Collecting and Representing Data), and Timelines and Rhythm Patterns (Changes).

Science

The BISD uses the Foss science kits. For second grade they focus on:Insects, Liquids and Solids, Pebbles, Sand, and Silt. These kits include a multitude of hands-on activities and emphasize exploration.

Social Studies

2nd grade's social studies units focus on the community of Bainbridge Island. Specifically in the areas of Geography (Major physical features of the Puget Sound area; Location of Bainbridge Island in Washington State, the United States, and the world), History (Changes in the Bainbridge Island community over time; Bainbridge Island traditions and cultures, past and present), Economics (Different jobs and services in the Bainbridge Island community), and Civics ( Working and living together; People remembered for their contributions).
